"Difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations"

Such as the M62 to Salford?

As a young boy while growing up in Tokyo, my grandad used to say...

'when we take life too literally we miss the joy..'

....

That's a lie.... my Grandad never said that, but it sounded cleverer than it actually is, so i'm keeping it. .. oh.. and I grew up in Stockport, not Tokyo - but in many ways aside from the history, architecture, culture, language, size and vibe they are pretty similar.

Anyway.. back to the quote...maybe if you're on a difficult road, turn around a drive somewhere easier.. or maybe stick with it.. just incase the quote is indeed true.

This reminds me of a childhood memory actually. On my 15th birthday I was playing a Cello duet (with my ex-boyfriends sister's dad's neighbour) at the Albert Hall, and my grandmother stood up right in the middle of my Schumann recital.. as all heads turned to her she bellowed..

“Remember to make all important adult life decisions based on what inspirational quotes are trending on Pinterest."

Yeah that may not be true either.. but maybe we should listen to my Grannys fake prophetic outburst and casually forget the complexities of life and Carpe diem the fuck out of today, turn on beast mode, ignore the haters, shine bright, take risks and be a bad ass CEO girl boss today? .... why not!

p.s I don't play the Cello.

#motivationmonday

Are most gym machines pointless? Hmm.. mostly yes. Are most gym machines pointless? Hmm.. mostly yes... but there is a time and place for each and every one of them...

In this months Oxygen (US edition) there is big feature on machines and I was asked to share my thoughts. I gave my advice on biomechanical techniques, how to increase mind-muscle connection and when & how to program select machine exercises in to your regime. You can read about it at: www.danrobertsgroup.com/press.

The more we all understand the body, a bit of physics & the science of exercise programming; the more expertly we can use all the many exercise tools in a useful, effective and fun way.

But should you listen to me? YES. but with a pinch of salt.

If you love exercise then use people like me and articles in mags as mere entry points to your learnings...nothing more.. nothing less!

The way to transcend disinformation online isn't to just to follow 'better' gurus...It's to do your homework, apply critical reasoning and take ownership of your knowledge & opinions.

I always encourage my private clients to question my programing, as is keeps me in check and helps them learn. There should be a reason for every micro decision, not just what exercises to do today or this week, but every rep range, tempo, rest time, drop set load et al .... every teaching point should have a clear and valid scientific rationale behind it. and If I can't clearly and elegantly justify something using science/facts... then don't listen to me!

Learning the facts about fitness, nutrition and exercise is empowering. It means you don't get taken in by nonsense (ketone diets, slimming teas, z-list celebrity endorsed bikini body workouts etc) ...and the more you know about fitness and exercise the more fun it is to do!

Stay safe & happy Sunday
D.x
Fitness Infulencer Vs Fitness Coach & the relat Fitness Infulencer Vs Fitness Coach & the relationship you have with Instagram...

The best thing about being a real coach not a 'fitness influencer' is that you don't have to 'act'.. you don't need to constantly worry about your personal brand, creating content and being a salesman - you can just quietly just get on with your work helping your clients behind the scenes.

Social media is indeed a great marketing tool for many businesses. But it's not the only one and if we do use it, we don't have to act like everyone else to make it work for us.

Many wonderful coaches I know simply don't want to be on here.. and I get it... while intellectually you can justify it to 'build your brand'... it can feel like a massive competition.. and if I were cynical I could say that the fitness people superficially 'winning' on instagram in my industry are mostly not that successful as real coaches (thus having all that spare time to post TikTok bollocks) and often act like spoilt children showing off how cool, well travelled or pretty they think they are. But the truth is more nuanced than that.. and there is a murky grey line between Influencers and coaches... but you get why so many coaches don't fully embrace it right?

Personally.. I actually quite like Insta.. I've made new friends & got new clients because of this platform... but I'm not a slave to it.. Here are 3 things that I do that help me enjoy a positive relationship with this platform. If you’re feeling a bit jaded by the gram.. they may help you too.

1) I don't come on here too often. In fact when I'm not posting I usually delete the app. Otherwise I find myself on a 3 hour binge swipe-athon.
2) I don't take it too seriously. I take my career seriously...but little else in life. Caring about the curated image of strangers isn't the best use of my time & energy.
3)I don't take it personally! My self esteem isn’t effected by likes & comments. I’m just trying to be of use to you..but doing it in way that feels authentic to me.

What do you do to stay sane while swiping on here?

Happy new year. Watching random fireworks from my Happy new year.
Watching random fireworks from my garden tonight was an unexpected bonus!

On my stories this evening I wanted to share some great accounts that I think you should follow - as they will have better 2021 advice than me. ... some I’ve included on here. - so please swipe.

I would gladly write an essay on everyone I follow.. but I’m 15 people in on my stories and my fingers are tired! So I think I’ll call it a night and log off.

.. I don’t follow any muppets so maybe just follow everyone I follow! - my friends on here all rock in their own unique ways. I also want to give a special shout-out to @amyyoungnutrition for her help this year (and throughout the last few years) with my company -

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes for any ‘brand’ and Amy has been a big reason for our success.

Running a business - or multiple businesses in my case is never a solo effort... @diana1510 @metalpotatouk and numerous others have done a lot of stuff behind the scenes that help our customers smile and make me look good! Thank you.

I don’t have anything profound to say about last year or 2021... I’m just pleased 2020 is over as it’s been a bit shit.
Laters...
D.
2020 has been a test for everyone in different way 2020 has been a test for everyone in different ways... it has highlighted so many peoples compassion and resilience & yet for a minority it’s highlighted their childlike selfishness or idiocy.

I want to believe that all people have become more compassionate after seeing so many peoples lives either lost or profoundly wounded by Covid, but I think the pandemic has just exaggerated our innate dominant personality traits; Kind people have become more empathetic, self-absorbed people have become even more focused on themselves, people who moan and complain a lot.. now do it more.

Conspiracy theorists & catastrophisers have had fun doing their thing.. and yet on the flip side the mentally strong people I know have become even more stoic, those with real entrepreneurial spirit have quietly pivoted their businesses and caring, kind and compassionate people now shine brighter than ever before.

Yes, the human condition is littered with inconsistencies and this pandemic has also highlighted how unfair the world and society is.. so there are a million aspects to this pandemic and many different ways to interpret it all.

So... do you think there is a right or wrong way to react to the pandemic?..

I don’t know the answer but i do know that when I look back on this in 5 years time I don’t want to be embarrassed by the way I dealt with it, nor do wish any lessons I can learn (from the things that have happened to me, my loved ones, my community, my industry and the world) to be un-acted upon.

My lessons, the things that I have learned are probably irrelevant to your life.... as it’s a such personal thing I guess.

The whole point of this rambling post is to ask you this.. what have YOU learned from 2020.. And how are you going to grow from this ?

Feel free to share or keep it to yourself.. I just think it’s important to take a step back and think about it all.

P.s Sending love to anyone alone at Xmas day . I’m doing a free zoom group fitness workout on Xmas day If your need a bit of support/distraction. Just message me for details ❤️✌️
