Trying to live my life according to random quotes Trying to live my life according to random quotes I find on Pinterest isn’t usually a good plan... but today I’ll think I’ll make an exception.. if rather an ironic one as I’ve stopped my work to write this!

I had had quite a few people DM me ask me if I’m okay because I haven’t posted in a while. Thanks to those that asked.. Yeah I’m cool.. I just don’t have anything to say right now - mainly as I’m getting my head down finishing off writing/filming a new advanced strength & conditioning qualification for trainers.

I like spending my time creating things that will last. What have you created/done in the last 6 months that challenged you... that you’re truly proud of? .... have you got really fit, eliminated a vice, learned a new skill, set up a new business ?

So many posts I reads in this pandemic are from people in my industry telling me that we shouldn’t put pressure on ourselves ... and I get that too much pressure is bad... BUT... so is too little pressure.

I’m not talking to home-schooling parents here and those of you with zero time... I’m taking to those of you that are watching too much Netflix and contemplating setting up a TikTok and generally feeling a little bored.

Doing nothing with your time and justifying it by convincing yourself that you’re looking after your mental health is mentally dangerous, kinda lazy and it’s wrong. Looking back, feeling guilty and not realising your potential... and not seeing what your capable of with a bit of graft isn’t good for your mental health either.

Now I’m pretty flawed as people go. But I’m alway honest to others... and more importantly I’m honest to myself. I know when I’m being lazy and I know when I talk a good game but am not putting the work in. My mental health is pretty good (I think) as I know myself and am always 100% honest with myself. I’m not trying to be overly kind or overly harsh. I’m just honest.

I’m no psychologist... but being awake, aware and accurate about yourself seems a good foundation to being less anxious, more successful and happier.

Maybe, maybe not? .. What do you think?
So.. today is #nationalhuggingday :) My good fri So.. today is #nationalhuggingday :)

My good friend Suz Duckett .. founder of the new @onollaofficial brand asked me to get involved in this today... which I’m more than happy to do.

If you’re not immersed in the world of luxury wellness, then Suz is the lady to know as she’s always has her finger on the pulse of such things! She’s the ex editor of the Tatler spa guide, an author, speaker and consults for all kinds of luxury brands globally. You can follow her (@thisistheantidote ) as well as checking out her new Onolla brand 👏🏻👏🏻

So today Suz is doing a socially distanced #hugcampaign - where we hug a tree (always a nice thing to do with ones time) and we also send virtual hugs to 5 people that we think may need it.
Today I want to send my 5 virtual hugs to @theurbankitchen @georgiamayjagger @riaingleby @katebeckinsale and @kimingleby -

Thank you Suz for asking me to get involved. It’s nice to spread a bit of kindness & positivity on social media when we can! -

Feel free to join this @onollaofficial #hugcampaign by tagging in 5 friends who just might need a hug right now too.

Pre Covid - Teaching #wallisday some fight choreog Pre Covid - Teaching #wallisday some fight choreography.

I have loads of movement coaching and screen combat training footage on my phone, figured i'd share a little bit.

To make a fight scene look real and bad-ass on screen actors puts a lot of time in pre-production; First to learn the basic sequence and create muscle memory..(like in video). then after x amount of hours/days they must play around with actually portraying the right emotion and physical language of their character through the fight scene and this must be drilled too (exploring different ways of using eyes, facial tension, fluidity of movement, breathing etc).

Then you have to add in the other big variable.. I.e the other actor(s) (or stuntpeople - which makes life 10 x easier!) they are fighting. On a big budget job when we have time, it’s very precise. Much more precise than a real fight actually!... it feels like a ball room dance when it's done right.

There should be perfect correlation with both the type of attack & defence used and the appropriate skill level of execution with the character they are portraying.

The best flights on film feel real. eg. Hugh Grant and Colin Firth having that rubbish fight in Bridget Jones 2.. that was hilarious.. and perfect! If Hugh Grant busted out some Jet Li Wushu Kung Fu moves, it wouldn't have worked. Authenticity is always the goal.

In the last 15 years the standard of fight skills required for actors has gone up dramatically.. which is handy for me as it keeps me busy. Screen Combat is fascinating as it goes way past just knowing how to flight... you have to understand camera angles, story-telling and the many aesthetic and practical nuances of different martial arts to truly add value to an actors performance and help the story/production as a whole.

The more I understand Acting the more I know I would suck at it!!. It's sooooo hard to do it so it looks easy!. Well... I guess it's like anything.. the better you get at something in life, the easier it looks to the uninitiated!.

p.s @wallisday. - I edited the bit out where I kneed you in the... (.. just spent 5 mins desperately looking for an appropriate emoji...I failed )
"Difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations"

Such as the M62 to Salford?

As a young boy while growing up in Tokyo, my grandad used to say...

'when we take life too literally we miss the joy..'

....

That's a lie.... my Grandad never said that, but it sounded cleverer than it actually is, so i'm keeping it. .. oh.. and I grew up in Stockport, not Tokyo - but in many ways aside from the history, architecture, culture, language, size and vibe they are pretty similar.

Anyway.. back to the quote...maybe if you're on a difficult road, turn around a drive somewhere easier.. or maybe stick with it.. just incase the quote is indeed true.

This reminds me of a childhood memory actually. On my 15th birthday I was playing a Cello duet (with my ex-boyfriends sister's dad's neighbour) at the Albert Hall, and my grandmother stood up right in the middle of my Schumann recital.. as all heads turned to her she bellowed..

“Remember to make all important adult life decisions based on what inspirational quotes are trending on Pinterest."

Yeah that may not be true either.. but maybe we should listen to my Grannys fake prophetic outburst and casually forget the complexities of life and Carpe diem the fuck out of today, turn on beast mode, ignore the haters, shine bright, take risks and be a bad ass CEO girl boss today? .... why not!

p.s I don't play the Cello.

#motivationmonday

Are most gym machines pointless? Hmm.. mostly yes. Are most gym machines pointless? Hmm.. mostly yes... but there is a time and place for each and every one of them...

In this months Oxygen (US edition) there is big feature on machines and I was asked to share my thoughts. I gave my advice on biomechanical techniques, how to increase mind-muscle connection and when & how to program select machine exercises in to your regime. You can read about it at: www.danrobertsgroup.com/press.

The more we all understand the body, a bit of physics & the science of exercise programming; the more expertly we can use all the many exercise tools in a useful, effective and fun way.

But should you listen to me? YES. but with a pinch of salt.

If you love exercise then use people like me and articles in mags as mere entry points to your learnings...nothing more.. nothing less!

The way to transcend disinformation online isn't to just to follow 'better' gurus...It's to do your homework, apply critical reasoning and take ownership of your knowledge & opinions.

I always encourage my private clients to question my programing, as is keeps me in check and helps them learn. There should be a reason for every micro decision, not just what exercises to do today or this week, but every rep range, tempo, rest time, drop set load et al .... every teaching point should have a clear and valid scientific rationale behind it. and If I can't clearly and elegantly justify something using science/facts... then don't listen to me!

Learning the facts about fitness, nutrition and exercise is empowering. It means you don't get taken in by nonsense (ketone diets, slimming teas, z-list celebrity endorsed bikini body workouts etc) ...and the more you know about fitness and exercise the more fun it is to do!

Stay safe & happy Sunday
